High parallelization efficiency in barotropic-mode computation of ocean models based on multi-grid boundary ghost area 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In general, barotropic-mode computation requires the largest communication time in ocean models because of its iterative nature, when parallel computation is performed based on regional partitioning. In this study, reduction in the overhead time included in the communication in the parallel computation of the barotropic mode is considered to achieve a high parallelization efficiency of ocean models. We verify that the reduction in the communication frequency based on the multi-grid boundary ghost area reduces the total communication time. We find that this is because the sum of several kinds of overhead time for communication occupies a fairly large part of the total communication time. We discuss the trade-off between the decrease in communication time and the increase in computation time due to increased boundary area in such cases, leading to a determination of a suitable width of the multi-grid boundary that minimizes the total required time. We also discuss the efficiencies of the one- and two-dimensional partitioning of the model domain, when a multi-grid boundary is used. In general, two-dimensional partitioning is more efficient than one-dimensional for large partitioning numbers. 相似文献

The study of the Kuroshio in the East China Sea and the currents east of the Ryukyu Islands 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In this study, the inverse method is used to compute the Kuroshio in the East China Sea and southeast of Kyushu and the currents east of the Ryukyu Islands, on the basis of hydrographic data obtained during September-October, 1987 by R/V Chofu Maru. The results show that: (1)A part of the Taiwan Warm Current has a tendency to converge to the shelf break; (2) the Kuroshio flows across the section C3 (PN) with a reduced current width, and the velocity of the Kuroshio at the section C3 increases and its maximum current speed is about 158 cm/s, and its volume transport here is about 26×106m3/s; (3) the Kuroshio has two current cores at the sections C3 (PN) and B2 (at the Tokara Strait); (4) the currents east of the Ryukyu Islands are found to flow northward over the Ryukyu Trench during September-October, 1987. The velocities of the currents are not strong throughout the depths. This study compares infrared and microwave measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) obtained by a single satellite. The
simultaneous observation from the Global Imager (GLI: infrared) and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR: microwave)
aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) provided an opportunity for the intercomparison. The GLI-and AMSR-derived
SSTs from April to October 2003 are analyzed with other ancillary data including surface wind speed and water vapor retrieved
by AMSR and SeaWinds on ADEOS-II. We found no measurable bias (defined as GLI minus AMSR), while the standard deviation of
difference is less than 1°C. In low water vapor conditions, the GLI SST has a positive bias less than 0.2°C, and in high water
vapor conditions, it has a negative (positive) bias during the daytime (nighttime). The low spatial resolution of AMSR is
another factor underlying the geographical distribution of the differences. The cloud detection problem in the GLI algorithm
also affects the difference. The large differences in high-latitude region during the nighttime might be due to the GLI cloud-detection
algorithm. AMSR SST has a negative bias during the daytime with low wind speed (less than 7 ms−1), which might be related to the correction for surface wind effects in the AMSR SST algorithm. 相似文献

In order to investigate the validity of buoy-observed sea surface temperature (SST), we installed special instruments to measure
near-surface ocean temperature on the TRITON buoy moored at 2.07°N, 138.06°E from 2 to 13 March 2004, in addition to a standard
buoy sensor for the regular SST measurement at 1.5-m depth. Large diurnal SST variations were observed during this period,
and the variations of the temperatures at about 0.3-m depth could be approximately simulated by a one-dimensional numerical
model. However, there was a notable discrepancy between the buoy-observed 1.5-m-depth SST (SST1.5m) and the corresponding model-simulated temperature only during the daytime when the diurnal rise was large. The evaluation
of the heat balance in the sea surface layer showed that the diurnal rise of the SST1.5m in these cases could not be accounted for by solar heating alone. We examined the depth of the SST1.5m sensor and the near-surface temperature observed from a ship near the buoy, and came to the conclusion that the solar heating
of the buoy hull and/or a disturbance in the temperature field around the buoy hull would contribute to the excessive diurnal
rise of the SST1.5m observed with the TRITON buoy. However, the temperature around the hull was not sufficiently homogenized, as suggested in
a previous paper. For the diurnal rise of the SST1.5m exceeding 0.5 K, the daytime buoy data became doubtful, through dynamics that remain to be clarified. A simple formula is

An excitation of inertial oscillation in the upper layer east of course of Typhoon 9019 was fortuitously observed at three surface buoys deployed during the Ocean Mixed Layer Experiment (OMLET). The observed inertial oscillation was compared with wind fluctuation measured at Ocean Weather Station T (29°N, 135°E) which was placed at the center of a triangle with three vertexes occupied by the respective surface buoys. Inertial oscillation is effectively excited in the mixed layer at the eastern margin of the typhoon by a rapid decrease of wind rather than by prevailing strong wind. It is shown by means of a least square deviation that the inertial oscillation observed in the mixed layer has a period of 23.9 hours shorter than the local inertial period of 24.7 hours. This shorter period suggests that the inertial oscillation has the finite velocities of phase and group as an inertial internal wave. A theoretically obtained ratio of vertical component of group velocity to that of phase velocity, approximately agrees with observed value. The structure of the turbulent boundary layer underneath laboratory wind waves was studied by using a combination of a high-sensitivity thermometer array with a two-component sonic flowmeter. The temperature fluctuations are used to detect movements of water parcels, with temperature as a passive quantity. The turbulence energy was dominant in the frequency range (0.01 0.1 Hz), which was much smaller than the wind-wave frequency (2 5 Hz), and in which the turbulence was anisotropic. There was a frequency range (0.2 2 Hz for velocity, 0.2 5 Hz for temperature fluctuation) where the turbulence was isotropic and had a –5/3 slope in the energy spectrum. These points are the same as those in previous works. However, by analyses of the time series by using a variable-interval time-averaging technique (VITA), it has been found that conspicuous events in this main turbulence energy band are the downward bursting from the vicinity of the water surface. Thus the structure of the water layer underneath the wind waves has characters which are similar to the familiar turbulent boundary layer over a rough solid wall, as already conceived. It has been found that, at the same time, the turbulence energy can be related to quantities of the wind waves (the root mean squared water level fluctuation and the wave peak frequency), for different wind and wave conditions. Sperm whales are notable squid-eaters. They feed mainly on medium to large-sized cephalopods at midwater levels and defecate near the surface. This suggests the existence of an upward transport of60Co by sperm whales from the mesopelagic zone (150–1,200 m). To elucidate this squid-whale route for this artificial radionuclide,60Co content was determined in squid and in predator whales captured by commercial whaling. In the Cephalopoda livers60Co levels of 30–500 mBq kg–1 wet were found and in the viscera of Odontoceti (toothed whales) 15–40 mBq kg–1 wet. About 0.3% of80Co ingested was estimated to be retained in a 23-year-old male sperm whale. In the livers of Bryde's whales,60Co levels of 40–80 mBq kg–1 wet were detected, but not in euphausiids and sardines, their possible prey. The level of Co in sperm whales was nearly the same as in Bryde's whales. Specific radioactivity60Co/59Co in mBq µg–1 was several times higher in sperm whale (1.1–1.6) than in cephalopods (0.19–0.77). Eating prey with a high content of60Co in the 1960's may have contributed to the present body burden in sperm whales with a long-life span. The recent sea-ice reduction in the Arctic Ocean is not spatially uniform, but is disproportionally large around the Northwind
Ridge and Chukchi Plateau compared to elsewhere in the Canada Basin. In the Northwind Ridge region, Pacific Summer Water (PSW)
delivered from the Bering Sea occupies the subsurface layer. The spatial distribution of warm PSW shows a quite similar pattern
to the recent ice retreat, suggesting the influence of PSW on the sea-ice reduction. To understand the regionality of the
recent ice retreat, we examine the dynamics and timing of the delivery of the PSW into this region. Here, we adopt a two-layer
linearized potential vorticity equation to investigate the behavior of Rossby waves in the presence of a topographic discontinuity
in the high latitude ocean. The analytical results show a quite different structure from those of mid-latitude basins due
to the small value of β. Incident barotropic waves excited by the sea-ice motion with large annual variation can be scattered
into both barotropic and baroclinic modes at the discontinuity. Since the scattered baroclinic Rossby wave with annual frequency
cannot propagate freely, a strong baroclinic current near the topographic discontinuity is established. The seasonal variation
of current near the topographic discontinuity would cause a kind of selective switching system for shelf water transport into
the basin. In our simple analytical model, the enhanced northward transport of summer water and reduced northward transport
of winter water are well demonstrated. The present study indicates that these basic dynamics imply that a strengthening of
the surface forcing during winter in the Canada Basin could cause sea-ice reduction in the Western Arctic through the changes
of underlying Pacific Summer Water. 相似文献

Simulation of Formation and Spreading of Salinity Minimum Associated with NPIW Using a High-Resolution Model 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
A series of numerical experiments were conducted with a high-resolution (eddy-permitting) North Pacific model to simulate
the formation and spreading of the salinity minimum associated with the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW). It was found
that two factors are required to simulate a realistic configuration of the salinity minimum: a realistic wind stress field
and small-scale disturbances. The NCEP reanalyzed wind stress data lead to better results than the Hellerman and Rosenstein
wind stress data, due to the closer location of the simulated Oyashio and Kuroshio at the western boundary. Small-scale disturbances
formed by relaxing computational diffusivity included in the advection scheme promote the large-scale isopycnal mixing between
the Oyashio and Kuroshio waters, simulating a realistic configuration of the salinity minimum. A detailed analysis of the
Oyashio water transport was carried out on the final three-year data of the experiment with reduced computational diffusivity.
Simulated transport of the Kuroshio Extension in the intermediate layer is generally smaller than the observed value, while
those of the Oyashio and the flow at the subarctic front are comparable to the observed levels. In the Oyashio-Kuroshio interfrontal
zone the zonally integrated southward transport of the Oyashio water (140–155°E) is borne by the eddy activity, though the
time-mean flow reveals the existence of a coastal Oyashio intrusion. In the eastern part (155°E–180°) the zonally integrated
transport of the Oyashio water indicates a southward peak at the southern edge of the Kuroshio Extension, which corresponds
to the branching of the recirculating flow from the Kuroshio Extension.
